HomeCourses › The Trusted Advisor: B2B Sales

The best B2B salespeople are not the pushiest. They are the ones clients trust, come back to, and recommend. This self-paced programme shows business development and sales people how to build that trust on purpose: understand the client deeply, add value before you ask for anything, and grow into a genuine trusted advisor.

Who is this course for?

It is for business development managers, account managers and sales staff in New Zealand businesses who sell to other businesses and want longer, deeper, more valuable client relationships.

It suits people new to a BDM role who want a strong foundation, and experienced sellers who want to move from chasing transactions to being the advisor clients rely on.

Why it matters

Clients do not leave advisors they trust.

Trust is the difference between a supplier who gets squeezed on price and an advisor who gets the call first. This programme builds that trust deliberately, not by accident.

Why consultative selling is not optional in a market this small

Most sales training is written for markets that do not exist here. It assumes a pipeline you can refill, a territory deep enough to absorb a few burnt bridges, and buyers who will never compare notes. New Zealand is not that market, and the numbers are worth sitting with before you spend another dollar on activity.

The buyer pool is far smaller than the headline count

Stats NZ counted 617,330 enterprises in New Zealand at February 2025, up half a percent on the year before. Around 74 percent of them have no paid employees at all. MBIE puts businesses with fewer than 20 employees at roughly 97 percent of all enterprises.

Strip that back to organisations big enough to have a formal buying process and the picture changes completely. Fewer than 3,000 enterprises in the entire country employ 100 or more people. Break it down by sector and the numbers get uncomfortable. All of New Zealand holds roughly 339 manufacturers with 100 or more staff, about 162 in wholesale trade, and about 147 across transport, postal and warehousing.

If you sell into one of those sectors, your genuine addressable market is a list you could read in an afternoon. Every buyer you handle badly is a measurable percentage of it, and in a market that size they will talk to each other long before your next campaign lands.

What actually predicts sales performance

The largest synthesis of the field pooled 268 studies covering 79,747 salespeople across 4,317 organisations. Only five factors significantly predicted performance. The two strongest were selling-related knowledge and the ability to adapt to the person in front of you.

The detail underneath that is what most product training gets wrong. The researchers deliberately folded old-fashioned technical knowledge, meaning knowledge of features and benefits, into a broader category that also covers knowing the customer, the roles of the individual people in their buying group, and what the product actually means for each of them. Product knowledge on its own was not the finding. Knowing the product and the room was.

A separate meta-analysis across 155 samples and more than 31,000 salespeople found adaptive selling behaviour raised performance on every measure used, including manager-rated and objective performance, not just the seller's own opinion of how they were doing.

The room got more crowded and less patient

Gartner's buyer research puts the typical enterprise buying group at five to 11 stakeholders representing around five different business functions. Its 2025 survey of 632 B2B buyers found 61 percent would prefer an entirely rep-free buying experience, and 73 percent said they actively avoid suppliers who send them irrelevant outreach.

Read those two numbers together. Buyers are not avoiding sellers because they dislike people. They are avoiding sellers who cost them time. The same body of research found buyers were considerably more likely to complete a high quality deal when a rep was involved alongside good self-service information, which is the whole argument for being useful rather than being present.

One honest correction, because a sharp buyer will raise it

Trusted adviser does not mean well liked. Research across more than 6,000 sales reps found that the classic relationship builder made up only about four percent of top performers in complex sales. Being pleasant, available and agreeable is not the same as being worth the meeting. The sellers who won were the ones who taught the buyer something about their own situation.

We should also be straight about the evidence base. We could not find any New Zealand specific research on business to business selling or seller trust, and we are not going to invent a local statistic to fill the gap. The market structure figures above are official and current. The selling research is international.

What a short course can and cannot do

It cannot hand you a network, a reputation or a decade of sector knowledge. Those are earned and there is no shortcut. What it can do is stop you spending the small number of first meetings this country will ever give you on a pitch nobody asked for, and give a technical person, an owner or a new BDM a repeatable way to make the first conversation worth the buyer's hour.

Common questions

Who is the programme for?

Business development managers, account managers and sales staff who sell to other businesses and want deeper, longer client relationships.

How is it delivered?

It is fully online and self-paced, made up of 21 lessons you can work through in your own time and revisit whenever you like.

What will I be able to do after it?

Build client trust deliberately, understand clients more deeply, add value proactively, and hold the courageous conversations that set an advisor apart.

Can I enrol my whole team?

Yes. Get in touch about enrolling a sales team and we will set up the right plan.

Is this only for salespeople?

No. It is built for everyone in the chain: sales managers, sales staff, technical representatives, and business owners who have sales staff or BDMs reporting to them. The reason it works across those roles is that they share one problem. In a market with fewer than 3,000 enterprises employing 100 or more people, every one of them is working a finite list, and every conversation carries more weight than it would in a larger economy.

Does trusted-advisor selling just mean building relationships?

No, and the research is fairly blunt about it. A study of more than 6,000 sales representatives found the classic relationship builder made up only around four percent of top performers in complex sales. Being liked is not the mechanism. What predicts performance is knowing the customer and their buying group well enough to say something useful, and adapting to the person in front of you. Warmth without usefulness is just a pleasant waste of a buyer's time.

We sell a technical product. Is this relevant to our engineers and specialists?

It is arguably most relevant to them. The largest meta-analysis in the field treats knowledge of features and benefits as only part of what matters, alongside knowing the roles of individual people in the buying group and what your product means to each of them. Technical specialists usually arrive with the first half already in place and no training at all in the second. That is a narrower gap to close than it looks.
